Early this afternoon, on the bluff side of the big lake, a Pileated
Woodpecker was giving persistent alarm calls. At first I thought my
presence was disturbing it, but its continued distress after I proceeded
down the trail suggested otherwise. Before long, I found myself almost
face-to-face with a perched Sharp-shinned Hawk. It sat for many minutes, no
doubt waiting for me to leave, before it took off and flew past at
head-height. Once it left the area, many of the usual residents came out of
hiding.

On the river trail, there was a flock of Tree Sparrows foraging. The
conifers had no sign of the pair (possibly trio )of owls I'd seen there on
Sunday.
