Hi birders, It was a good weekend for birds in our yard here in Big Lake Township. Friday morning I stepped outside to grab some firewood and heard a couple of hoarse croaks. Two Common Ravens were flying over--heading north.
Later in the day a Sharp-shinned Hawk buzzed the bird feeders but came up empty-taloned. Saturday morning a Northern Shrike buzzed the back yard feeders and also came up empty. It perched in a tall shrub next to our patio for a few seconds. Saturday afternoon a Red-shouldered Hawk perched in one of our back yard trees long enough for me to get the spotting scope on it. Yesterday (Sunday) we had another (same?) Carolina Wren. I had posted about the one we saw on 11/23. We also had one at the suet feeder on Christmas Day. As I started writing this I was thinking it would be fun if it became a regular daily visitor for a while, and the thing showed up again today. All four sightings have been late in the afternoon--3:00 to 4:00 PM. A couple of you expressed an interest in making it a county bird. I'll keep you posted.
