The Battle Lake CBC (Otter Tail Co) had great weather and great birds on 
December 30th. 18 counters tallied 46 species plus 5 count-week birds.

Notables: 1041 Trumpeter Swans (more than Canada Geese!); 5 raptors on count 
day, including a Merlin and a Goshawk; added Fox Sparrow and Northern Saw-whet 
Owl to the cumulative count; continued seeing Eurasian Collared-doves in the 
town of Ottertail; Pine Grosbeaks and a beautiful male Varied Thrush just west 
of the Battle Lake Nursing Home/Battle Lake Motel; Red Crossbills (White-winged 
Crossbill on count week), and 1062 Common Redpolls. 

Notable misses on count day: Ruffed Grouse, Barred Owl, Horned Lark, Lapland 
Longspur, Cedar Waxwing

Notable strange sight: our only Bohemian Waxwing hanging with 50 European 
Starlings.

And, Matt Mecklenburg won the coveted Battle Lake CBC Traveling Trophy!
