Both an adult male Barrow's Goldeneye and an adult female Barrow's were present
at Canal Park in Duluth today, but they were not associating with each other.
The male Barrow's was instead paired with a female Common, as first noticed by
Mike Furtman who found the bird about an hour before I went down to see it.
This male was clearly the same one which overwintered in Duluth (and which has
done so for about five consecutive winters), as evidenced by its very short
spur on the foreflanks. The female Barrow's appeared to be a new migrant,
arriving with a sharp increase in the number of goldeneyes during the last day
or two (from about 150 to over 500). Photos and further details of these two
Barrow's are being posted to MOU Recently seen.
