As part of our "Spring Celebration" and International Migratory Bird Day event, the refuge will be offering a guided bird tour on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7:00 a.m., and lasting until approximately 11:00 a.m. We'll meet at the Mahnomen Trail on CR 9. The first part of the tour will be a car caravan trip "behind the gates" to look at birds on St. Francis and Carpenter Pools, and the woodlands in between them. Depending on weather and any amount of rain we might get, conditions could be good for shorebirds. The group will then hike either Blue Hill or Mahnomen Trail, or have the option of making a loop on the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive.
Your tour leader will be Doug Stucki, a veteran refuge volunteer bird guide. I will accompany the group for the behind the gates part of the tour only, which I anticipate will take up the first 1-1/2 hours of the tour. The tour is offered free of charge, being co-sponsored by Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, the Friends of Sherburne, and the MOU Field Trip Committee. You MUST pre-register for the trip! You can email: [email protected] with your name, number in your group, and a contact phone number, which is requested only in case we would have to cancel for some reason. You can also call me at the refuge - 763/ 389-3323 ext. 13 and leave the information. Driving directions from the metro and area communities can be found on our website, and there are maps there too. http://www.fws.gov/refuge/sherburne/ It's important that you BE ON TIME for the behind the gates part of the trip, because the gate will be locked behind the last car in the caravan, and we'll need to stay together as a group while on the interior of the refuge. If you have any questions, email or call. It should be a fun trip!
