Spent the afternoon at the Superior Entry watching and chumming for gulls. Highlights: - 6 first cycle Thayer's Gulls - 1 second cycle Thayer's Gull - 1 third cycle Thayer's Gull - 2 adult Thayer's Gulls - 1 first cycle Great Black-backed Gull - 1 second cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull Counted approximately about 1600 gulls at the entry way while I was there. Many of them were Herring Gulls and Ring-billed Gulls. Right as I was about to leave Andy Gilbert from Steven's Point spotted to small ducks swimming against the Minnesota side of the break wall in the entry. He asked me "hey check those ducks out, they have a white dot next to their eyes" I scanned across with my scope and identified them as Harlequin ducks! They were imm/female type plumage and they were hugging the break wall and diving quite a lot feeding off the wall. I do not know if people on this listserv heard but a 2nd cycle California Gull was photographed two days at the entry sitting on the Minnesota side of the entry. These photos can be viewed on Facebook on the North American Gull group page and also on the Wisconsin Birding group site. Several birders have been looking for this gull in the last two days with no luck. I also got a second hand report a Gyrfalcon was captured by some falconer along the north shore of Lake Superior in the Knife River area. I do not have a day when this occurred but it sounded like the Gyr was captured this month. A Great Gray Owl has been seen quite regularly in Sax-Zim Bog and there has been two Hawk Owl sightings this fall so far. I heard about a Hawk Owl in Kittson County and the other in northern Lake County.
