On Monday, December 16, I noted a flock of a dozen crows at an
intersection near Kings Highway and 36th street, Minneapolis.
The crows were actively picking up something from the pavement. I
thought at first they were working on a piece of road kill.
They appeared to be picking up and eating the blue stained road salt
piled on the intersection.
I've never seen birds eating salt. If they were picking up the salt and
doing some anting behavior, I didn't see it.
Has anyone else?
It could be that the crows confused the salt with grit, but that is pure
speculation.
