Butch Ukura and I birded around Aitkin County this morning and found several interesting birds: 3 GREAT GRAY OWLS, 3 SNOWY OWLS, 2 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE, 4 GRAY JAYS, 3 RUFFED GROUSE, 40 SNOW BUNTINGS, RAVENS, ETC. The first Great Gray was on C.R.18, 2 1/2 miles east of hwy 169. The second Great Gray Owl was 2 3/4 miles east of hwy 169 on C.R.18. The third Great Gray Owl was 1 1/2 miles south of C.R. 18 along C.R.5. The first Snowy Owl was 3 1/2 miles north of Aitkin along hwy 169. The second Snowy Owl was along C.R.1 about 4 1/2 miles north of Aitkin. The third Snowy Owl was along C.R.1 about 5 1/2 miles north of Aitkin. The first Northern Hawk Owl was long C.R.18 about 1 1/2 miles east of hwy 169 (note that there were 2 hawk owls at this spot last night). The second Northern Hawk Owl was along C.R. 5 about 2 1/2 miles south of C.R. 18. Both Northern Goshawks were along C.R.18 and the Boreal Chickadee was along the snowmobile trail that goes south from 320th place.
