Been busy showing people the birds up here and I thought I give a quick update on the latest bird sightings.
*Duluth Area:* Snowy Owls are still being seen in Duluth in the Port Terminal area along Garfield Avenue and along the road going past the Ready Cement Plant along the St. Louis River bay area. Dusk and dawn are the best times to look for these owls. Snowy Owl along Riley Road off Jean Duluth Rd is still holding on to its winter territory despite all the visitors its been receiving to see this beautiful owl. Best time to view this owl actively hunt is at dusk (3-5:15pm). Hawk Owl: I been watching a Northern Hawk Owl along the Lester River Road the last few days and the area to watch for this owl is north of Lester Park Golf course in the next open fields on both sides of the road. There is a small shoulder to park your car and scan for the owl. Seen it yesterday on the east side of the road in a small grove of trees. *Sax-Zim Bog Area: 40 minutes NW of Duluth.* Snowy Owl (imm female) Look for this owl along CR 7 north of the greenhouse either south or north of Dibble Rd. Scan from the shoulders of CR 7 and look for it on the ground, on buildings and on top of telephone poles and trees. Snowy Owl (imm male) seen several times off Stone Lake Rd. Go about 1.5 miles east of CR 7 to large open area and you will see a hydrant pipe sticking out of the ground and small pull off. Scan the trees to the south for it. Snowy Owl (imm male) possibly a new owl was seen by several birders including me that was perched in the NW corner of Sax Rd and CR 7 yesterday. It then flew north to the DNR wood lot area with un name road (not plowed). Hawk Owls: Best Hawk Owl to locate is old reliable along Owl Avenue south of Arkola Rd. The other Hawk Owl is off Stone Lake Rd at the same location to scan for Snowy Owl. * All other reported Hawk Owls in Sax-Zim Bog have appeared to move on. Great Gray Owl: Last Friday was last time I viewed a Great Gray Owl and despite with a lot of local guides and people no one can locate a Great Gray Owl in Sax-Zim Bog. So today a birder reported a Great Gray Owl along the Admiral Rd near the feeders. Northern Goshawk: Best road is along CR 133 between Pine Rd and CR 7. Other roads worth looking is Admiral Rd, McDavitt Rd and Sax Road. Saw a adult on Sax Rd near McDavitt Rd two days ago. Pine Grosbeak & Evening Grosbeak Best place for Pine Grosbeaks ( 2 dozen or so ) is at Loretta's Feeders off the Kelsey Whiteface Rd. There is a sign along the road letting you know where the feeders are located. You have to walk down the foot path to view the feeders. Best spot for Evening Grosbeak is the blue house along CR 444 off CR 27 and this house just put up signs welcoming birders to view the feeders and please if you visit these feeders please donate money to the donation box they have put out so they can keep these feeders going through out the winter months. Another spot for Pine Grosbeaks is the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center off Owl Avenue. Boreal Chickadee and Gray Jays are easily found at the Admiral Road feeders. Sharp-tailed Grouse and Ruffed Grouse: Sharp-tailed Grouse have not been reported in the bog in nearly a week. Do not know what happen to them. Ruffed Grouse can be found at dusk and dawn basically anywhere in the bog but the best road in my opinion is the Nichols Lake Rd off CR 7. Snow Buntings and Northern Shrike: Snow Buntings can be found by cruising CR 7 and watching them fly off the RR tracks. Northern Shrike can be found along CR 7, Stone Lake Rd, Admiral Rd and McDavitt Rd. Ryan Brady put some color coded bands on a Northern Shrike on the Arkola Rd and if you see this Shrike please report it. *Lake County* Great Gray Owl: Best spot is the last 2-3 miles of Lake County Rd 2 before it intersects with Forest Road 11 (Langely River Area) Tim Glacklin reported one of the owls last Sunday morning in this area. Spruce Grouse: None were seen this week despite many attempts by local guides. Maybe its the cold weather and small amount of snow on the road? *Ely / Winton Area* Bohemian Waxwings were seen Monday and Tuesday along Miner's Road near the Vet. Hospital and I also saw a big flock in the Winton area on the north side of Main Street. Evening and Pine Grosbeaks are quite numerous in the Winton Area. -- *Mike Hendrickson* *Mike Hendrickson Guiding <http://mikehendricksonguiding.com>* *Sax-Zim Bog <http://www.sax-zimbog.com>* ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
