Thanks to Denny Martin for tips on birding in Roseau county. Note the dike
road from county road 3 is open for a 5 mile stretch of the WMA. Enter near
pond one and drive til the road is closed due to a slump. The dike road will
be open for 24 hours a day through this weekend, then open weekends both day
and night through mid August, last night of effect Sunday, Aug 17th. I will
be going back out there tonight. Staff Randy and Jessica were helpful with
suggestions on roads and trails and conditions.
Visiting in the heat of the day wasn't ideal but I checked out the area.
Shorebirds there included SOLITARY SANDPIPER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the
first stop at pond one, with juvie Black Terns, etc. Before getting to the
WMA, on one of the side roads, I had group of Marbled Godwits, apparently an
adult and 3 chicks because the 3 were downy and the adult was calling to
them or scolding them to (?) follow her etc. Two Common Loons on Pond 2
surprised me but they are on the checklist for summer as common. Two diff
family groups of Trumpeter Swans had 6 cygnets each. One with a golden
colored neck collar reading 000.
Mosquitos are bad but no ticks at all so far in several days of birding
Roseau County. Perhaps the bug off clothing with deet applications is
helpful. Road 310 is so busy with Cedar Waxwings and Red-eyed Vireos but
warblers are deeper in the forest. I had 6 species of warblers today in 3
hours. Two border patrol stops to check on my intentions. Haven't seen
another birder yet, just folks doing target practice, fishing, on ORVs,
spraying fields, farming, border patrol etc! Lists from the 2 locations are
on ebird with locations as noted above. judy meredith, [email protected]
