It was a banner day for Horned Grebes in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co. I started
counting HOGR and RNGR daily at the end of March on Minneapolis Lakes Harriet,
Calhoun, and Nokomis it was a fun way to start off each morning. I enjoyed
watching the numbers fluctuate and continue to rise each day. This morning I
found that those migrants had burst at the seems overnight and the total of
HOGR for these 3 lakes were 1913. Shortly after sunrise I started at Nokomis
which held the highest count of 882 spread out in large rafts across the lake,
what a spectacular sight that was. There also was 1 Red-necked and 2
Pied-billed in the mix.

Second place went to Harriet with a total of 844 - HOGR, and Calhoun only had
187. With such a short time to enjoy these handsome passing migrants here in
the metro this was a fun highlight. Each lake was scoped several times, and
numbers were tallied by counting each individual head.
