Just now, from my window in Meadowlands Township (Saint Louis County) I noticed a single swan fly over, headed north. This is a rural area with few to no ponds around that would be open and swimming with feral waterfowl. My first assumption, from its pristine white and black bill, is that it was a trumpeter. An odd and unexpected sight in a region of hay meadows. I haven't glimpsed the St. Louis River lately but will this week-end; it may be running partially open. *Tanya Beyer*
