Thanks all for the input. I think Rough Legged is more likely, given habitat and time of year. The bird was large further reinforcing the Buteo ID more likely. A Rough-legged would still be a new yard bird here.
Side note – A Red-tailed Hawk made several appearances this fall, as well. He was not terribly nervous and just looked at me sort of quizzically. Must have made off with a couple squirrels as they seem much more nervous lately.
