This morning between 9 and 11 a.m. we walked along the eastern side of the river below the Coon Rapids Dam and observed a flock of 9 Common Goldeneye swimming and diving, as well as 1 male Common Merganser who was sitting on top of the ice on the shore across from us preening himself and then taking a nap. I distinctly saw his red bill and red feet and he was much larger than the Goldeneye surrounding him in the water. Unusual to see just one and so early in the year?
