On Saturday, while walking through the nature area behind our house, I heard a
cacophony coming from a very large willow tree. Perched on top of the tree were
two Red-shouldered hawks (they nest in the vicinity every year) and one
Cooper's Hawk, all protesting loudly at the Great Horned Owl perched on a large
branch about 15 ft below them. They took a few futile dives at the GHO, but the
owl largely ignored them. The party broke up a short time later when some crows
arrived and scattered the hawks by diving at them. They ignored the GHO for the
most part, which was surprising. The rest of my walk was pretty quiet, the only
birds of note were a pair of Phoebes and one Song Sparrow.
