As part of the ongoing Marsh Lake Ecosystem Restoration Project (Big Stone, Lac qui Parle and Swift Counties), the lake is currently being drawn down/dewatered. This has exposed many acres of mud flats that are starting to attract shorebirds. While the access points on the downstream end of the lake are closed for construction on the dam, there are 4-5 other public accesses around the lake with potential vantage points. You will most likely need to have rubber boots and walk to the cattail edges for much of a view, but it should be worth it. I made a very quick visit to the access below my house in the northeast portion of the lake and saw several dozen including the usual peeps, killdeer, pectorals and yellow legs, but also black-bellied and semi-palmated plovers. Be prepared for mosquitos if you go! Curt Vacek ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
