Closing Date - 5 pm on Wednesday 17th August 2005

Embark Initiative announces details of second call for postgraduate research
funding applications The Embark Initiative, the research funding programme
run by the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology
(IRCSET) today announced the dates for its second round of postgraduate
research funding applications. The Embark Initiative's Postgraduate Research
Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level
researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology. Up to 40 Embark
Initiative scholarships will be on offer, with additional collaborative
scholarships from industrial partners. The call will open on Monday 11th
July and will close at 5pm on Wednesday 17th August. All references must be
received by 5pm on Wednesday 24th August. As in previous calls, all
applications and references must be made via the online eGrants system on
the IRCSET website, www.ircset.ie. It is the applicant's responsibility to
ensure that all referees are aware that they must complete a form online and
submit by the referee's closing date of 24th August. The second call is
independent of the first call, in that all applicants who applied but were
unsuccessful in the first round must re-register and re-apply in the second
round if they wish to be considered for funding. The appearance of the
online system will be different, and IRCSET urges all potential applicants
to allow plenty of time to familiarise themselves with the redesigned form
before submitting their application. No changes can be made to the
application once it has been submitted.

Intending candidates should carefully read all of the information available
on the web site - http://www.ircset.ie/grant_schemes/postgrad.html. EMBARK
Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme Under the Postgraduate Research
Scholarship Scheme, funding of EUR19,050 is provided for each of three years
for Doctorate level research (total funding of EUR57,150) and one year
(EUR19,050) for Masters level research. Of the EUR19,050 maximum per annum
available to Masters and Doctorate students, EUR12,700 goes directly to the
student with the remainder available to fund other forms of support such as
fees, appropriate travel and other expenses. A social insurance contribution
is also provided for, in addition to the above. Funding is available for
three years to outstanding students though this time period may be revised
to cater for students whose research demands longer time periods. Eligible
candidates will be proposing to commence a research based degree for the
first time in October 2005 and will not previously have been registered for
a course leading to a postgraduate research qualification. Only candidates
with academic records at higher honours level are likely to be successful.
