I think you have two problems here, as I also had this 'out of build
directory name' problem on IRIX

Sym links solved my problems, which I was later later told are build issues
between PSM and NSS.  NSS using autoconf would be one fix to this problem,
so perhaps you would be interested in

After a few other bug fixes the IRIX port of PSM now works, still using sym
links to get it to build.
