Error messages were often confusing. If I remember correctly some
versions of Communicator said something about "unable to connect to
server" if recipient's certificate was present but not valid (e.g.
expired or CRL expired). Also if validation of the certificate fails
due to expired CRL this should be made as clear as possible - maybe
even with popping up a window for retrieving the new CRL from a
cached URL.

Clicking on the lock to get a description of what is currently
missing to sign or encrypt an e-mail was helpful. Also searching the
recipient's certificate via LDAP with a quick button from that
window should be possible in Mozilla. Today I miss to access the
certificate managment directly from this lock (checked with 0.9.2 -
correct me if I'm wrong).

CRL retrieval should also be possible via LDAP.
