I assume that sometimes helping the police results in reducing crime
and that sometimes that is a good thing.

The US has a bill of rights to protect us but people still get
shafted, it's an imperfect world. If you're lucky you live in a
society where you can work to improve things if you care to. I live in
such a society, as far as I can tell.
