What do you see, and what did you expect to see?
Mozilla clients only log into tokens 'as needed', so it might be that Thunderbird doesn't think it 'needs' to log into the token. If, on the other hand, you are logging in by hand using the device manager, then it is completely baffling. Thunderbird and Firefox are using the exact same code path in that case. The only explanation I could think of is environmental differences that prevent your token from loading or cause your token to load a different version of your pkcs11 module (as wtc suggested).
