On Tuesday night there was a mozilla.org staff meeting, the first part of
which was also attended by Ian Hickson, and Frank Hecker and I via
teleconference. This is a summary of what came out of the meeting, from my
point of view :-)

Note: Because newsgroup posts are not persistent, Aaron Leventhal has
agreed to host a web-based discussion forum for further discussion of
these issues. As soon as he's set it up, the URL will be posted here and a
copy of this message will be posted there. It is hoped that this will
also serve as a collating point for ideas.

Firstly, deciding what to do with the website reorganisation involves
deciding who the website should serve. This then expands into the larger
question of who is mozilla.org trying to serve? As consensus on the answer
to this question does not seem (to me) to have yet been quite reached by
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the long-term plans for the reorganisation of the
website need to be flexible enough to accommodate any one of a range of
possible answers.

It was decided that it would be a good idea to have both a short term and
a long term plan. On the one hand, "If it's better tomorrow, that's good"
but, on the other hand, we are probably not going to reach where we want
to be by making incremental improvements to the current site. The idea is
therefore to set up two teams - a short-term team (STT) and a long-term
team (LTT), with at least one person on both.

The STT will look at things which can be done, within the current site
structure, to make information more accessible. This could include (for
example) rewriting index pages, providing some form of simple dmoz-alike
index, or changing the links in the current sidebar.

The LTT will look at where we want to be, ideally, in six months time, and
work towards implementing that. This could include (for example)
prototyping in various different site-management engines, working towards
total page standards-compliance or implementing an FTP-to-CVS gateway.

Both teams are currently recruiting, and open to anyone ;-) I've stuck my
hand up to be a member of the STT.

Ideas already put in this newsgroup will hopefully be sifted into STT and
LTT ideas, and then each team will look at the possibilities open to it
and decide on a course of action.

That's a plan :-) Comments?
