Okay, let's say we are unveiling the new site at the same time as
Mozilla 1.0. Since the old site was a bit stagnant, messy and cold, why
not have the new site impart a feeling of freshness, cleanliness and
warmth!? That seems to be what Matthew is trying to show us here. So I
don't think it's a matter of him doing something too early, or whether
it's exactly what we want or not - but is this closer to the new
attitude we'd like to have - perhaps one of enjoyment and good
organization.
Personally, I'm tired of the apathy and beaten-down feeling I get from
some people in Mozilla. People are working hard, and this is an
extremely fun project that frees people to make neat cross-platform
apps either as web pages or via XUL, so let's show our attitude from
the first impression.
Matthew, do you think you can revamp the sidebar to have fewer links -
not the exact ones we'd end up with, but an approximation? Also, I'd
like us to link to our best friends on the front page: mozillazine,
mozillaquest, NewZilla (www.gerbilbox.com/newzilla), xulplanet.com and
xuldev.
Perhaps that first image is a bit tall? What do others think? At least
we should then make use of some of the space it creates on the right?
Eventually I'd like to see us have some categories:
Newbies, Users, IT Managers, Web developers, Hackers.
As far as I'm concerned, Newbies should just like to Newzilla, and we
should support him with his quest to answer the most basic questions. I
also think we should support xuldev or xulplanet or some combo of both
as our XUL section of the site - why reinvent the wheel? Rather than
trying to be the end-all/be-all site, why not build community by
supporting the importance of other sites? So, if the question is
resources, let's support other sites in their efforts by using them for
parts of our site :) It helps Mozilla if the other sites become popular
and officially recognized. How does it help an open source project if
we try to be everything?
The front page needs to answer the question - is Mozilla more like
Linux or RedHat? What is it? It can answer the question by having
a "Distributions" link, which can lead to a list of Netscape,
Aphrodite, Beonix, Mozilla's own, etc.
