As an American that's done oodles of (bad) writing in Canadian context
(where English English rules), carelessly offending sensibilities on
both sides of the fence that might care, i have to agree w/ Gervase:
*do not* waste precious bandwidth trying to resolve this issue. Who
really cares, anyway? My experience tells me that Canadians can
ultimately deal with any English (so long as it isn't French ;-), and i
suspect Brits and Yanks are also too busy to care.

If for some reason a policy is deemed necessary, then the only one i
could support is to handle it essentially the way i handle gender-biased
language: mix it up as evenhandedly as possible. Else we must all hide
our true colo[u]rs by means of patently ridiculous conventions, and the
cent[e]r[e], [s]he canna' hold, Cap'n. Cheers, mates.
