I found a post with suggested cure with Google, but admittedly I had to
get as far as the fourth page of results.

The error means that some part of your Mozilla installation isn't
compatible with some other part. Likely causes are an extension made for
1.7 used with 1.8a, or installing one build over another without deleting
the previous install.

If you didn't say yes when the installer asked about deleting your
existing installation folder, try reinstalling and doing that. Failing
that, try deleting the Mozilla.org folder under program files, and under
program files\common files and reinstalling. If that still doesn't work,
try with a new profile, and if that works then you probably have a duff
extension in your old profile which you need to remove.
