The docs on Adam's site are out of date. If you read through the old news you would see that since v1.4 support files are needed that don't ship with a standard GRE. Since v1.5 Adam has been providing them as an installer. (And they change sometimes, the zip for v1.4 doesn't work with v1.5.)
He really should update the rest of the docs though.

The documentation does not explicitly state that! Granted, it does offer an installer for the control. Nevertheless it claims that it's possible to use a standard Mozilla installation to register the control. It's just that the documentation gives insufficient and misleading advice where to find the control.
