Hi,
I've been waiting for Netscape 6 release for months, but I'm very
disappointed by the current one. Fewer features than the old ones,
and sooo slooooow ! Marketing rules :-((
Netscape brains should have let the developpers work as they used
to (I hope... ;-), and and not force them to release this featureless
and speedless version :-(
--
Anyway, I've been trying to have it work for two days. And as I'm
very angry about those details, my thought is not as clear as it
could be :-) So, maybe there are some simple solutions to the
problems listed below :
* Messenger 6 does not import data from 4.7. This worked with the
6PR1 on another machine, but nothing to do with the 6 Final on
this machine. I had to do it by hand with... explorer :-)
(mail, bookmarks and filters, but I didn't manage to copy the news)
* At startup, the activation screen pops up. No way to 'Cancel' the
activation, I do not need (and do not want) any web-based
services on Netcenter. No way to bypass. I finally tried to
register, just to get rid of that pop-up. No way, strange error
messages.
* Help does not run (strange error messages, again)
* My Sidebar : the onlything I would see there is my current bookmark
list (not the webcenter-based 'bookmarks from anything'). I managed
to do that with the PR-1 on another machine, nothing to do with
this one. 'bookmarks' does not appear in the list of available
items, and 'preview' and 'add' buttons are disabled.
* GUI display is slow, and general message processing is slow. I clicked
on 'subscribe news' before typing this message, it's still retrieving
the newsgroups list from the harddisk in a loud noise ! Ok, that's easy
to solve : I can buy 1.5 GHz CPU, 10k rpm HDD U2W LVD and some hundreds
of Mb of RAM... But what should the 'normal' user say, seeing that the
old 4.7 is much faster, and even IE5 is much more faster ???
--
After the unuseful critics :-) here are a few wishes for the future
releases (don't know if they are in the current todo list) :
* Messenger, message filters : button 'Apply filters NOW'
(such Outlook does ;-)
* Bookmarks / Add bookmark : popup to allow to change the name of the
bookmark (such IE does :-)
* GUI: XML, XUL and such acronyms may be a dream for programmers, they
are a catastroph for the users... Speed enhancement should be one of
the priorities for the future (GUI speed, not html speed).
* Plugins manager : Should allow to activate/deactivate plugins. i.e.
disabling Flash on slow sites, or disabling PDF plugin to allow
direct save to disk. (without moving flash.dll and pdf.dll to
the trash, such as I did :-)
* Does the Prev/Next buttons work ? What's the disk cache caching ?
Whatever you do, pages are still re-loaded and the 'Back' button
usually generates net traffic. I'm dreaming of 'real' playback,
where the 'back' button would display immediatly the whole
layout of the previous viewed page (no matter of ASP/forms
inconstancies, just viewing the previous page as it was displayed
a few seconds ago...)
--
End of this looong message. Hope someone will help me to solve the
above problems, before I solve them in a more radical manner :-)
I'm still dreaming of a simple & efficient WWW browser and mail
client, with lots of useful features, and in which I could deactivate
all the unneeded multimedia & ressource-eating functions, which could
be multi-platform, and which would send *absolutely* NO data to the
manufacturer's site without user agreement...
It's near 02:00AM, maybe I'm sleeping, and I'm really dreaming :-|
Regards,
