Mozilla 0.7: 18 java_vm processes under linux?

I wonder why there are so many processes after starting 
Mozilla under Linux:
There usually are 4 or five "mozilla" processes and about 18
java_vm processes, when the first navigator window is shown
(that shows about:blank by the way)
This is odd ...
