This appears to be a FAQ.

The reason you see so many processes is the (IMNSHO) messed up way Linux
shows every thread as an individual process.  You're seeing multiple threads
belonging to the same process.

The vast majority of resources are shared by those threads, so the actual
resource consumption isn't anywhere near what top would portray.
