Can't help you with uninstalling an xpi, (I've never heard of a way to
do that??), but I might be able to help you with the IM thing.

In a week or so, Eric Murphy is expected to put together a new build of
Jabberzilla. Jabberzilla is a Jabber client (connects to a Jabber
server, and therefore, many other Instant Message servers *like ICQ,
MSN, Yahoo!, and AIM*). Jabberzilla resides in the Sidebar, so you
might want to try it out when a new release comes out soon. There is
more info over at http://jabberzille.mozdev.org
