Where did you hear that? I've always been told that if you
truly want to get involved in the testing, get a nightly,
since it has all the most recent code and bug fixes.
Reporting bug in a milestone can be useless since the
nightly may already have that problem fixed.
Nightlies are not as unpredictable as they seem, since you
can check to see if there are any major problems that might
affect you before you try a nightly:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=RESOLVED&email1=&emailtype1=substring&emailassigned_to1=1&email2=&emailtype2=substring&emailreporter2=1&bugidtype=include&bug_id=&changedin=1&votes=&chfield=%5BBug+creation%5D&chfieldfrom=&chfieldto=Now&chfieldvalue=&product=Browser&product=MailNews&short_desc=&short_desc_type=substring&long_desc=&long_desc_type=substring&bug_file_loc=&bug_file_loc_type=substring&status_whiteboard=&status_whiteboard_type=substring&keywords=&keywords_type=anywords&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0=&cmdtype=doit&newqueryname=&order=Reuse+same+sort+as+last+time
The link above is to Bugzilla's "Bugs Already Reported
Today" list. Blockers are listed on top, next are critical
ones. Looking at this link before I try a build has saved me
from downloading a horrendous build on many occasions.
I can't speak for the milestones since I haven't used them
in months. When I used to use them, the milestones were
generally more predictable, but only GENERALLY. They are
still test software just like the nightlies.
What configuring time are you talking about? Are you talking
about profile problems?
As a Mail/News user, I do know what you're talking about.
Regressions aside, things have generally improved and been
speedier, but a LOT more still needs to be done.
