I'm sure new approaches would be welcome, if they survive an initial
criticism such as this thread.

The only such idea I have seen is "a good starter page" -- I don't think
anyone has said that that was a bad idea.

Unfortunately no-one has volunteered to write such a page.

Such a fix could cause a number of problems:

 * In C++, an incorrectly added space can cause the tree to go red.
 * In CSS, an incorrectly added space can cause the chrome to die.
 * In JS, an incorrectly added space can cause features to stop working.
 * In a data structure, an incorrectly added space can cause memory
     corruption leading to a hard-to-track crash.

Without knowing the code well, how can you determine which of these will
happen or not?
