Putting the X there in the first place was not based on any usability 
data.  Given that the whole feature hasn't really been through any 
usability testing, all I really have to go on is feedback from the 
newsgroups. :)

Another reason the X is confusing is that I want to support having the 
tabs on either the bottom or the top (I suspect people will prefer 
having the tabs on the bottom).  The X would be very out of place in the 
bottom right of the window, if we were to move the tabs to the bottom.

I do plan to support CTRL+W to close a tab, using File/Close to close a 
tab, and using middle-click to close a tab.  This is in addition to 
CTRL+F4 and the context menu, which can already be used right now.  That 
gives the user *five* different ways to close a tab, and that seems like 
plenty to me.
