That really should work to start the dialer. Can't say why it doesn't. You note that you are using ADSL. Doesn't that mean you have a permanent connection to the internet? If you are already connected to the internet, starting an application which needs connection would not start a dialer. If you do Start|Settings|Network and Dial-Up Connections , do you see a LAN connection and one or more dial up connections?
