I posted the solution to this recently, maybe that is the discussion you 
were thinking of?

The problem is that IE, being part of the OS, uses a different mechanism 
to trigger auto-dial, Moz needs RAS Auto switching on.

OK, this is what you need to do on W2K, should be the same in XP:

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

Find "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager", right click and click
Start. Also, right click->Properties and change the Startup Type to
Automatic so that it starts when Windows starts in future.

Note that it won't throw up a Stay Connected/Disconnect Now dialogue 
when you exit.
