What I want to do is to have a horizontal scrollbar for the listbox by using
style="overflow:auto" on the listbox, so the listbox can be horizontaly
scrolled when its width is bigger then the width assigned to the listbox. On
windows XP the result I get for the XUL listbox is different then the
behaviour of the native listbox under the same conditions.

scrollleft.gif - this is what happens when the XUL listbox has both a
horizontal and vertical scrollbar. The vertical one is on the right edge of
the listbox box, out of the view port, and therefor it is not being
displayed.

scrollright.gif- when scrolling to the right the vertical scrollbar is
reviled.

native.gif - This is how a native listbox looks under the same conditions,
the vertical scrollbar is always on the right edge of the view port.

What I want to do , as far as scrolling is concerned, is to have my XUL
listbox emulate a native listbox.

For that, you need a bug fixed. There is someone working on it, if I recall --- Nate Neilsen, see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232913
