Not wrt columns, but it does point out that scrolling is better than paging.
One problem with the vertical layout you diagramed is that you can only read it well *if* your viewport lines up with the column grouping breaks. It's great for printing, though, if those breaks line up with the page breaks. :)
Yes. I think the first layout --- columns as high as the viewport that overflow to the right --- is likely to be the best. It's also the easiest column layout to implement :-).
iht.com uses a hand-coded JS version of that layout, and I like it. Of course the JS approach has problems that we can get around.
