I also did some searching at the U.S. Govt.'s copyright office (www.copyright.gov), and I didn't see anything in particular that barred mozilla.org from having a copyright assigned to it -- in some areas, it seemed to make clear that mozilla.org could claim copyright to certain documents anyway as an employer. (People working for mozilla.org and writing docs for mozilla.org, mozilla.org can claim copyright for works generated as part of the job.)
It seems legitimate to me.
