As you know, the new Firefox logos are not currently in the CVS tree. This has lead to some concerns and and some very thoughtful questions.
We clearly need to provide more clarity on what the Mozilla Foundation is doing here, as well as an easy way to get the artwork for those uses that make sense.
I'm leaving on vacation in about 20 minutes, so wouldn't be around for most of the next week to participate in discussion, but I wanted at least to say something before I leave.
Why?
We'e got great logos. We would like to have those logos be associated with Mozilla Firefox, either versions shipped by the Mozilla Foundation or other versions that are closely related. This is for two reasons. First, it makes sense. And second, it is a requirement of trademark law. The Firefox logos should indicate some relationship with the Mozilla project. Indeed, trademark law pretty much requires this.
So I think licensing them under the MPL/[LGPL/]GPL isn't the right way to go, since by definition that would allow use on totally unrelated software.
So we need to take some time and figure out what uses make sense to the community and the Mozilla Foundation and are also acceptable under trademark law. Some uses are easy answers -- distributors who build Firefox from source for some reason but aren't modifying it should clearly be able to use the logos. We'll be working on this topic over the next few weeks. Bart wanted to get it done this coming week, but realistically I don't think that can happen. I would love to get all the important things done right away, but reality sets in.
So we'll be working on this. The questions and comments [received so far have been] very helpful, please keep the thoughtful questions and use cases coming.
In the meantime, if you're distributing Firefox and think you fit into the use cases where it makes sense to use the logos, please ask -- mail to [the netscape.public.mozilla.license newsgroup/mailing list] is perfect. Remember, I'm on vacation through much of next week, so can't respond before them.
