If you are using your computer at low resolutions or if your mail window
is small, then yes the header area is going to occupy a lot of space
compared to the actual message visible.
You can collapse parts of the header area. There's a gray collapse bar
on the left side of headers that you can click on to collapse them.
You can't make the headers scroll (away) with the rest of the message
though.
Since I'm using a maximized 1024x768 mail window, this isn't really a
problem for me.
