I don't have a usable build of Moz right now, but this sounds like a POP
issue, and it sounds like it would happen when the . is the *only* thing
on the line. Try sending mail to yourself (so it goes through your POP
server) with *just* one . on a line and see if that triggers the bug.
For similar fun, try putting the word "From" as the first word on a line
in 4.x mail (also try it in Mozilla, it may do the same thing).
If you can get this problem 100% reproducable, I'd suggest filing a bug
