Mail should default to threaded mode too. When person A sends person B a
message, and then sends a clarification, retraction, apology, or
whatever for that message by replying to their copy of the original
message, that clarification/retraction/apology/whatever really needs to
appear immediately below the original message in the thread pane. If it
appears far away from the original message, unnecessary aggravation
could result as person B responds to the original message before they
see the followup.

That probably wouldn't work. By the time a user realized the setting was
wrong, even if they were lucky enough to know that it could be changed
by ferreting around in the prefs dialog, all folders and groups would
have had their individual view settings initialized already -- so
changing the pref would have no effect (except for
newly-created/-subscribed folders or groups, which would generally be
few in number).
