Really? I don't think so. You just need
- in the Composer
  - 2 checkboxes for signature and encryption
  - maybe a drop-down  to select a cert, if there is more than one for 
the current identity (name / email address)
- in the viewer
  - an icon to show encryption / signature and its properties (strength 
/ verification succeeded)

The harder part is
- hooking it up with PSM, including creating and parsing S/MIME msgs, 
i.e. the Mailnews backend.
- The cert management UI (OK, not so hard for S/MIME, much harder for PGP)
