I also use the Standalone window in this way.  I'm not sure what the right
solution is though. In the three pane window, when you delete the message,
the NEXT message is displayed in the message pane.  You could argue the
Standalone should work the same way (displaying the next message when the
current message is deleted).  You could also argue that Standalone window
users use the Standalone because they want more control and Not showing the
next message is more appropriate.
