Yes, that'd be a compromise, but for me still not as good as before.
Considering how often I would do Delete - Close (instead of just Delete,
as before) (and other people would do Delete, Next, instead of just
Delete, as now), the pref is IMO still the best suggestion so far.
*If* we added the pref, I'd call it "After delete, go to next msg". If
disabled, the old standalone msg win would close and 3pane would display
a blank msg.
Or even make it more general and call it "Automatically go to next msg"
or similar. This would include the above behaviour, but also disable
Next, if SPACE is pressed and the end of msg is already reached (another
behaviour I dislike - I can use Page Down, but SPACE is larger :) ).
