Average joes never get as far as the FAQ.

Average joes never read the help docs, either. They do so only if they
can't find a human to help them.

Better than an explanation in the help, or tireless explanation by the
Netscape Champions (and their equivalents for other distributions),
would be for the files in question to be in a folder called `Temporary
Message Indexes', and for the files to be given an icon where the usual
page outline was dotted instead of solid.

That way, when a user browsed through her profile folder to look for
things which she could delete to fix her problem, it would be obvious
that the *.msf files fell into that category.
