If Mozilla didn't localize the display, the date would be in English.
Which set of routines Mozilla uses to localize the display is an
entirely different issue.

This thread refers to the date as it appears in the message pane. There
is no such column in the message pane. The width of the Date column in
the thread pane is irrelevant to the display of the date in the message
pane.
