It's generally accepted that if you've got an email address you have
permission to use the domain of that address for message-ids (which
should be unique across both mail and news unless they refer to the
same message).
And there is one big advantage to client created id: it gives the
option of including a user/personality token in the id so that it can
be (somewhat loosely in some cases) associated with the user solely by
the message-id.
I.e. -- if you'll look at my message-id's you'll see they all end in
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" when I am posting wth this email address in
the From, that means that you can filter my messages (and followups to
them) in the References header; i.e. if I was a really good troll,
constantly getting people to respond to me, you could kill any message
which was a direct followup to me; if I'm always offtopic you might
want to kill any message with one of my id's present (frequently
limited by AOL only including the immediate precursor, but depending
upon the filtering mechanism that might not matter).
And of course if I was the local guru you might want to read any thread
which I am participating in, so you'd want to highlite articles with my
id.
Basically -- client created id's are good, and realistically face no
more danger of collision than those created by servers.
