This may be old news to some, but it seems like a useful tip to post.
If you're like me, and you want all mail/news messages displayed in a
fixed-width font (even those sent with "format=flowed" in the header,
which Mozilla seems to always do), add the following to the user.js file
in your profile directory:
user_pref("mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support", true);
