Mozilla wraps mail/news at approx. 72 characters. Check out the source of
the mail/news posting by pressing Ctrl+U. Mozilla appears to not breaking
lines because it uses "format=flowed" for displaying messages - it
"optimizes" your viewing experience by breaking lines at the end of the
screen instead of a certain column.
You can disable this. Open your prefs.js and add the following line:
user_pref("mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support", true);
